Salvation Army Back to School Child Spree

August 6, 2016 will be the date for our third annual Salvation Army Back to School CHILD SPREE, co-hosted by Kiwanis Club of Woodland and Woodland Host Lions Club.  The event offers needy children pre-selected by Salvation Army the opportunity to have a hearty breakfast, go on a clothing shopping spree in JC Penney, receive backpacks with school supplies, get a haircut, get fingerprinted and have their vision screened.  Volunteers will help up to 75 needy youngsters to prepare for the upcoming school year.

The event will take place at the Woodland County Fair Mall.  Lions cook pancake breakfast for the kids.  JC Penney opens their doors early so volunteer shopper guides could take each child into the store where they each received school clothing and shoes. A calculator allows keeping track of purchases and are given to the child when they finish checking out.  Last year funds amounting to $100 per child towards purchased new clothing were provided by Salvation Army, Kiwanis, Rotary, Target and Omega Nu.

Between 60-70 children and parents will be given eye screening from the Lion's Eye Van provided by two eye doctors.  Those whose exams reveal perscription needs will receive referrals for additional testing and eyeglasses.

Last year Woodland Police Department (WPD), Woodland Fire Department (Engine 2) and California Highway Patrol (CHP) made a strong public relations showing, with officers mingling and firemen giving children the opportunity to climb aboard a real fire engine.  WPD K-9 Officer put one of their dogs through its paces.  WPD also provided Bicycle Safety Training to children in attendance that culminated in giving away a number of new bicycle helmets.  WPD provided fingrprinting services of children to be given to their parents for safe keeping of children.  CHP gave usefull information on child car-seat safety, with several new car seats given away to lucky participants.

Great Clips generously provided free haircuts to interested children.

Backpacks with school supplies inside were generously provided by Yolo County Backpacks for Kids for the 100 kids in attendance.
